How Will One Piece End? Theories, Dreams, and the Journey That Never Really Ends

How Will One Piece End? Theories, Dreams, and the Journey That Never Really Ends

Is One Piece ending?

Yes, One Piece is heading toward its ending, but there is no official end date. The manga entered its Final Saga on 25 July 2022, when it returned in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 34. Eiichiro Oda has given rough timelines before, around five years in 2019 and four to five years in 2020, and the story has run past both. At One Piece Day in August 2026, Oda was widely reported to have said the manga has roughly four or more years left. So the honest answer to “when will One Piece end” is: not soon, and not on any date anyone can confirm.

How it ends is a different question. Oda has kept the answer to himself for nearly three decades. What we can do is separate what is known from what fans believe, and that is how this guide is built. Every section below is marked either What we know or What fans think.

What has Oda actually said about the ending?

What we know. Oda rarely talks about the ending, so the few things he has said get repeated a lot, often wrongly. Here are the statements we could trace to a dated source.

When

What Oda said

Why it matters

July 2022

“The groundwork is roughly done. It took 25 years.”

The Final Saga is the payoff for everything set up since 1997

July 2022

“I’m going to draw every mystery of this world I’ve kept hidden until now.”

He promised to answer the big questions, not leave them open

July 2022

“This is where ONE PIECE begins!!”

Said half as a joke, but it set the tone for the Final Saga

September 2023

On the treasure: “it’s not something abstract”

The One Piece is a real thing, not a lesson about friendship

December 2025

“We are heading to ‘that island,’ which only the Pirate King was ever able to reach!!?”

His Jump Festa message pointed the story at the final island

The 2022 lines come from his message when the Final Saga began (our translation from the Japanese). The treasure line comes from his interview for the Netflix live-action series.

Rumours you can ignore

A lot of “Oda confirmed” posts are not real. As of 25 October 2026, we found no official source for any of these:

·      “One Piece ends in January 2027.” This spread on social media in October 2026. Nothing on the official One Piece news page supports it.

·      “Oda said it would end by 2025.” That date came from a 2023 article’s own description, not from Oda.

·      “Oda will change the ending if fans guess it.” Repeated everywhere, never sourced.

·      “Oda has already drawn the final panel.” Also repeated, also never sourced.

What is the One Piece? The leading theories

This is the biggest question in the series, and the most searched one. The story has told readers that the One Piece is the treasure Gol D. Roger left at the end of the Grand Line. Oda has said it is “not something abstract”. Everything past that is theory.

What fans think. These are the theories with the most support in the fan community. None of them is confirmed.

1.        The treasure is the true history of the world. The World Government erased a stretch of history known as the Void Century. Many fans believe the One Piece holds the full record of it, so finding it would expose what the World Government has hidden.

2.        The One Piece joins the seas into one. The world is split by the Red Line and the Grand Line. A popular theory says “one piece” is literal: the treasure, or what it unlocks, would break the Red Line and join the oceans into one sea. Fans link this to Sanji’s dream of the All Blue, a sea where fish from every ocean meet.

3.        A treasure left for someone else. Roger reached the final island and laughed at what he found. That reaction made fans think the treasure was meant for a person who had not arrived yet, and that Roger realised he was too early.

4.        A physical treasure plus something bigger. Since Oda said it is not abstract, many readers expect real gold and objects, with a historical truth or a weapon attached.

Our take: the theories that fit Oda’s words best are the ones where the treasure is a real object with world-changing meaning. “The real treasure was the friends we made” is the one ending Oda has publicly ruled out.

Joy Boy, Imu and the Void Century: what the ending has to resolve

What we know. Oda promised to draw “every mystery of this world”. Three threads sit at the centre of that promise.

·      The Void Century. A missing century of history, about 800 years ago, that the World Government erased. During the Egghead arc, a world broadcast confirmed that a war from that time was never really finished.

·      Joy Boy. A figure from the Void Century tied to the history the World Government wants buried.

·      Imu. The hidden ruler behind the World Government, seen on the empty throne in Mary Geoise.

What fans think.

·      Luffy finishes what Joy Boy started. Luffy’s Devil Fruit was revealed to be the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. Many fans believe Luffy is set to complete Joy Boy’s unfinished promise, and that the final war will be a repeat of the war from 800 years ago.

·      Imu is the final villain. Most theories expect the last battle to be against Imu and the World Government itself, not another pirate emperor.

·      The ending reveals the Void Century in full. Fans expect the final chapters to fill in this missing history and explain what the One Piece has to do with it.

Recent spoiler note: as of October 2026, the manga is in the Elbaph arc, set in the land of the giants. If you are behind, stop here and jump to the next section.

Luffy’s dream and why the journey is the point

What we know. Luffy has said from the start that he will be King of the Pirates.

What fans think. Many readers believe his real dream goes beyond the title. The most common guess is that Luffy’s real dream is about freedom for everyone, a world where nobody is ruled by a government that hides history. Some fans think it is as simple as a giant party with all the friends he has made. Both guesses fit the person Luffy has always been.

This is where the “never really ends” part of the title comes in. Even when the manga finishes, One Piece will keep going:

·      The anime finished its 2026 run and is set to return in 2027.

·      The Netflix live-action series has finished filming Season 3, The Battle of Alabasta, which arrives in 2027.

·      WIT Studio’s new anime retelling, THE ONE PIECE, is scheduled for Netflix in February 2027.

·      New sets for the One Piece Card Game keep arriving, with two more due in English before the end of 2026.

The crew’s journey has a finish line. The way fans live with the story clearly does not.

How fans keep the story alive: collecting One Piece cards

What we know. The One Piece Card Game was created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the One Piece manga. Its first Japanese booster, ROMANCE DAWN (OP-01), came out on 22 July 2022, three days before the manga entered its Final Saga. The English version followed on 2 December 2022.

The timing is a coincidence, but it means the card game and the Final Saga have grown up together. Many collectors now chase cards from the arcs they read week by week, and graded copies of key characters are a way to keep a piece of the story.

There is no official end date. The Final Saga began in July 2022. At One Piece Day in August 2026, Oda was widely reported to have said the manga has roughly four or more years left, but earlier timelines from 2019 and 2020 have already been passed.

What is Oda’s ending for One Piece?

Oda has not revealed it. He has said the treasure is “not something abstract” and promised in 2022 to draw every mystery of the world he had kept hidden. Everything else about the ending is fan theory.

How many more seasons are there of One Piece?

For the Netflix live-action series, Season 3, The Battle of Alabasta, has finished filming and arrives in 2027. The anime is set to return in 2027 after finishing its 2026 run.
